A crown, also known as a cap, is a restoration that fits over your tooth to protect it from further damage. The destruction is so significant (decay or fracture) that a filling would not provide the required functionality for you. Older crowns were made of metal, then were metal and ceramic. Now, they are all ceramic to match tooth color and offer amazing strength. A bridge is another fixed option to replace a lost tooth, and looks like multiple crowns together. Supported on teeth, it bridges the span of where a tooth is missing. Both crowns and bridges can also be implant supported.
Dentures and partial dentures replace missing teeth from an arch, but they are removable options. A complete denture, also known as a plate, replaces all the teeth in an arch, upper or lower. It’s supported by the soft tissue on the bony ridges of an arch. A partial replaces just some teeth and can be tissue supported, tooth supported or a combination of the two. They can be acrylic or a combination of metal and acrylic. Dentures and partials can be made to work much better if they are implant supported also.
The most common oral surgical procedure is the removal of a tooth that should no longer be kept. Oral surgery, however, is much broader and includes gum surgery, removal and shaping of bone prior to making dentures, biopsies, etc. Quite a bit of surgery can be done in our office, but if it seems too complex or there is a need for deeper anesthesia, we may consult with a surgeon.
Implant services all have a surgical phase and a restorative phase. Implants are the foundation upon which teeth are added, either as crowns, bridges, implant-supported dentures or partials. We provide all phases of restorative work on implants.
These can be various procedures for gum tissue and can be divided into non-surgical and surgical therapies. Our office offers a comprehensive array of non-surgical techniques and some surgical ones, as needed. From tooth polishing or the removal of deep tartar to sculpting the tissue for a more balanced and uniform look, we can help you.
In the realm of cosmetic dentistry, porcelain veneers or laminates are thin shells of ceramic that are bonded to teeth to change tooth shape or color, or to close minor gaps between teeth. They can be done on a few teeth, or they can be used for a complete smile makeover if needed. Since the development of very aesthetic types of ceramics, the results can be astounding.

In all our restorations, whether a small filling or a complex restorative case involving many crowns, we use tooth-colored resins or ceramics that come in a wide variety of shades. We do not use silver amalgam in any procedure done in this office. At the examination appointment, these decisions are made.
How many of us have heard a dentist say, “You have TMJ” and that was it? Facial pain, if not of dental origin, most likely will come from the jaw joints, the muscles that move the jaw, or both. Many dentists group all of these scenarios into TMJ. At Heartland Complete Care Dentistry, Dr. Wood has been trained to use a systematic approach to distinguish the sources of your pain. Only when a proper diagnosis is made can a treatment protocol be developed. Many people live with these conditions, and they are part of the chronic pain population. If your jaw joints make noise when you open, close or chew, you should be concerned. Pain and discomfort comes later, after significant degeneration has occurred.
Sleep apnea is the condition when someone stops breathing while they are asleep. It is a serious medical condition that can result in death. A lot of research has been completed in this area of medicine, and a lot of dental signs can tell us that something is not right. It is a medical condition with a dental solution. Many dental patients suffer from snoring and sleep apnea, and it is just part of good care to be able to recognize this condition and refer the patient for help. Dr. Wood has been working with pulmonology in Highlands County to help provide care for these patients.
